Letter to John and Elizabeth (Idol) Swaim from his niece
Laura residing at Forsythe Co. NC
Jan 30, 1890
Kernersville, PA
Mr. John M. and Elizabeth Swaim
Dear Uncle and Aunt
I seat my self for the purpose of writing to you for the
first time I ever made the attempt. I have been studying about you for some
time it seemed that I have a desire to hear from you one time more.
I guess you
will recollect me although I was small when you first left this state. I am
Joseph S. Swaim's third daughter and was married to David R. Stafford the fall
uncle was in this country visiting.
There is none of the family in this state except myself.
Columbus is in Missouri. Mary, Lee, Eliza, Cicero, Rufus, is in Kansas. Sarah
V. is, Oklahoma Territory. They are all married and have families except Mary.
She is single yet. I will say something about the relations.
Mother died six
years ago the 17 of July last. Aunts, brothers and sisters are all ded except
Aunt Letty Brown. She lives, Old Salem four of her children live there also.
There is none of Uncle William Idols children living in this state. Matthew was
the only one left here. He died about ten years ago.
As to Uncle John's children, John lives in the mountains.
Esther Ella and Anderson is still in the old neighborhood one of John.
Glasscocks sons owns and lives at the grandfather Idol's old place. There is
only two of the old neighbors living and that is Sarah Idol and Patty Idol they
are both pert. Aunt Polly Atkins is poorly. I went and staid two days and
nights with her. She sayes she had no one to look too as she have outlived all
of two families except one grandson of uncle Josiah. My daughter Bertie is
staying with her at present. Uncle Isaac and Aunt Linda Hammer is living yet.
Uncle Isaac is very feeble. Aunt Linda is as pert as a cricket or was when she
was to see me last.
Uncle Elleaner's children they are scattered about. I don't
often see any of them. Aunt Esther Meredeth lives somewhere near Ashboro. I
have not see her since I was married. Believe I have written about nearly all
of the relatives.
Uncle David Idol's children all except Herbert live near the
Yadkin river in Davidson Co. Aunt Polly died about two years ago. Louisa Essex
died some time ago.
I guess you want to know something about old Abbotts Creek
Church. One of George Williard's sons is the pastor of that church. My husband
is a member of the hard shells as they are called. Well I will soon have to
wind up my letter.
I believe I
haven't said anything about my children. I have seven: three sons and four
daughters. There names are Lida T., Bertie L., Frederick E., Mary A., Ernest,
Reuber B., and Carl Swaim, the last.
Dear uncle and Aunt, write to me and send me your pictures.
It would be a great pleasure to me to hear from you once more write about all
of your children.
Your neice
Laura Ann Elizabeth Stafford

All of this family moved to the mid-west except Laura

Lt in Civil War
According to the Regimental History of the North Carolina
2nd Infantry Battalion and the length of his military service, Joseph fought in
the Battle at Roanoke Island, North Carolina on 2/8/1862 and/or the Battle of Brandy
Station, Virginia on 11/8/1862. It would appear that with his resignation in
April/May of 1863, he missed the Battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He died
shortly after his regiment was mustered out, 4/9/1865.
