b. 1794 m1,
Rachel Dean - m2, Dorcas Coe
Colonel
William.Gilbreath m. Jan. 10, 1854, Guilford Co., NC, Dorcas Swaim Coe. b. 1805
in Guilford Co. NC, third child of Avery and Dorcas (Swaim) Coe. Her cousin
Reverend Isaac Coe was married to Sarah Deans, daughter of Daniel and Nancy
Deans, who may have been relatives of Col. Gilbreath's first wife. The
Dean/Deans family seems to have been somewhat prolific in that area. Avery
Coe's brother Reverend John Coe Jr. was the founding pastor of Mt. Moriah
Church where many of these families attended services and are buried.
On
January 8, 1852, William Gilbreath of Mt. Moriah congregation wrote to his
sister Jane Landreth at Bolivar, MO, and stated: "John Coe and Darcus his
wife are living he still Preaches to us at Moriah but he is Giting olde and
sumtimes feeble." Rev. Coe died September 13th that year and was buried in
the churchyard. Two years later Colonel Gilbreath married Rev. Coe's niece
Dorcas Coe, daughter of his brother Avery.
Leaders
of Moriah church when it was organized in 1813 were Joseph and
William.Gilbreath, James Hendricks and Reverend John Coe, Jr. Reverend Coe was
born in 1779 at "Coe's Addition," Worcester Co., MD, and moved to
Pleasant Garden, Guilford Co., NC, in 1783 with his father Captain John Coe,
who was captain of the Sinapuxent Battalion during the American Revolution.
John Coe, Jr., was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Church by Bishop
Francis
Asbury at Pleasant Garden, October 6, 1799. Mt. Moriah was founded on part of Rev. Coe's Guilford Co.
plantation -- four and a half acres he donated for the founding of the
congregation. That area of Guilford Co., just south of Greensboro, was known as
"The Coe Settlement." Rev. Coe's brother Major Jesse Coe, an early settler
in Florida, gave the invocation at
the statehouse in Tallahassee, June 23, 1845, when Florida was admitted to the
union. His nephew General Levin H. Coe, Speaker of the Tennessee State Senate,
was nominated for Vice President of the United States in 1848.
Pleasant
Garden, located ten miles south of Greensboro on Route 22, was founded in 1786,
for the most part by Methodists from Maryland. Ground for the first church
building was purchased on April 20, 1792. Trustees were William Weatherly, John
Coe, Daniel Sherwood, George Kirkman and Daniel Sullivan. Bishop Francis
Asbury, founder of American Methodism, personally visited the congregation on
two separate occassions. On November 15, 1798, he wrote in his journal, "We rode from.the upper
reaches of the Rocky River twenty miles, to Pleasant Garden. When I came to the
meeting house I had little strength of mind or body. We lodged at Daniel
Sherwood's. My aged brethren and sisters from Maryland and Delaware rejoiced to
see me . . ."
Avery
Coe, who was born in 1777 at "Coe's Addition," married September 9,
1797, in Guilford Co., Dorcus Swaim. She died before 1816 and I know little of
her family. I would love to learn more. Cicero Gilbreath was a grandson of
Avery Coe. You will note Sarah Jane Coe, daughter of Daniel C. and Nancy Jane
(Hunter) Coe, and Isaac Arlendo Coe, son of William.G. and Eliza D. (Wood) Coe,
named is Cicero Gilbreath's estate papers.
Let
me give you a little more on Dorcas Coe. Her siblings were Sally, born 1798,
who married August 29, 1815, George Kirkman; Martha, born 1800, who married
June 9, 1842, her cousin Rev. Isaac Coe, son of Rev. John Jr. and Hannah
(McMean) Coe; Dorcas, b. 1805, who married June 12, 1854, Col.
William.Gilbreath; Delilah, who married July 17, 1845, William.W. Causey;
Hannah, born 1825, who married March 14, 1849, Adam Mitchell Perdue; Betsey,
who married her nephew Avery Coe Kirkman, son of George and Sally (Coe)
Kirkman; and Catherine, born 1832, who married April 24, 1860, Jediah Kellam. The above family names
will be very familar to those researching in Guilford Co.
