Poem written
perhaps by Elvie's mother, appeared with her obit in the
Redwood
Reveile Sat. Feb. 18, 1893
Our hearts are near to break , for the voice we shall
not hear,
For the clinging arms around our neck , And the
footstops drawing near.
How shall we know our own, When the air is white with
wings-
Our
"Eisie", [Elvie] who so soon from us has flown, to the angles
musterings
'Tis a weary world, at best, This world that she will
not know
Would we waken her out of such perfect rest, For its
sorrow and strife? Ah no.
Escaped are its thorns and harms; For the only path
she trod
Is that which leads from the mother's arms, Into the
arms of God

b. September 1, 1877, at Orion, Henry Co., Illinois. The family migrated in the spring of 1882 to Orr, a farming community near Grand Forks, North, Dakota. In 1902, the family moved once more, this time settled on a homestead near Norwich, North Dakota. Leona m. Mark Wolaver, who was a native of Minnesota. Six children were born, all in North Dakota, and all of the children, except Irene who was the oldest, moved with the family to Texas. They moved south first to Brooks Co, Texas, where Leona's uncle, Hiram Calahan, was living. This region of Texas is known as the "King" ranch area and Hiram had been one of the early pioneers of Brooks Co., residing at the town site called, Flowella, Texas. (Near Falfurrias) A short time after their arrival in South Texas, Mark saw an advertisement in the paper of a cotton gin for sale in Marion co., East Texas. Mark and Leona decided to go ahead and buy this gin along with a house that was built on the property. [A story has it that there was a pot of beans cooking on the old wood-stove when they bought the property.] This meant, Marion co., Texas, was to be the family's new home, and the start of a familys Cotton-Gin business that would last into the next generation.
