Obituary of John R. Moon   -   Redwood Reveile   -   Saturday, January 28, 1893

Redwood Falls, Minnesota:

The death of Mr. John R. Moon occured at 2:30 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, at the home of his son, John Moon, in this city.  He had been a sufferer of cancer of the stomach for the past six months, growing weaker day by day, but remained conscious until Thursday forenoon, death coming at the above hour and relieving him from futher suffering.

John R, Moon was born in Westboro, Clinton County, Ohio, in the year 1818, and would have been 75 years of age on next Wednesday.  For seventy two years he lived a citizen of Westboro, coming to Redwood Falls in 1890 and has since lived with and cared for by his sons, David and John who reside here.  He is a member of the Friends Church, a thoroughly good man and a kindest of fathers, and  will ever be held in reverence by his children.  For illustration as to the kindness of his nature it is said that he asked forgiveness of his step-son, W.R. Hockett a few hours before his death, whom he remembered of whipping when but five years old.

A Widow and five children survive him, one daughter and four sons. Mrs. Rachel Moon, now in her 78th year of age, Mrs. Sarah Pfisler of Westboro, Ohio, and W.R. Hockett, A.H., David and John Moon of this place.

During the short time Mr. Moon has resided at this palce he has been known only as a kind and good old gentleman, and succeeded in makeing friends with all whom he came in contact.  He will be missed by many and the community at large will join the members of the family in mourning his loss.

The funeral will be held from the residence of John Moon, at 11 o'clock to-day, when a short funeral service will be conducted by Rev. John Sinclair.

Andrew died of injurys received the Pomeroy tornado of July 6, I893
From."The Storm" the historical eyewitness account of the 1893 Poneroy tornado

The home next north of the Brownell place was that of Tim.Mudge. Mr. and Mrs. Mudge and little boy and J. F. Wilkinson were standing in the hall. They had been watching the clouds and thought the worst of them.had gone by. The boy went to pass into the sitting-room.and the door was slammed against his arm, bruising that member badly. Then all were carried into the street with the house, and the three adult persons were caught beneath a wall that fell over them.as the house went in pieces. The wall was lying across Mr. Mudge’s limbs, pinning him.to the ground. Mr. Wilkinson was back farther under the wall, and succeeded in raising it on his shoulders sufficiently to free Mudge, who then held it up with his hands while Wilkinson crawled out. Afterward, the combined strength of eight men was required to remove the wall from.the street. Mrs. Mudge was hurt about the hips and back, Mr. Mudge had a wound on the head and his legs were badly bruised, and one of Mr. Wilkinson’s shoulders was bruised.

Mrs. Drummer and her two sons, at the house just north of Mudge’s home, saw the storm.in time to go into the cellar, where they were also joined by Mrs. A. J. Wilkinson. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson lived just across the street, in Will Barr’s house. Mr. Wilkinson intended to accompany his wife to the Drummer cellar, but thinking there was plenty of time, remained to close the windows and doors, and was caught by the death-dealing tornado before leaving the house, which was crushed and the ruins scattered in a northeasterly direction. Mr. Wilkinson was found under one of the fallen walls of the Wykoff residence, across the street north. His thigh was broken and he was otherwise mashed and bruised. He died at 6:30 the following morning. The occupants of the Drummer cellar, excepting Mrs. Drummer, who had a broken arm, were uninjured. Their escape seems almost miraculous when it is known that a large stallion was dropped into the 10 by 12 cellar with them.and floundered there in his death agonies.

Note;  Ruth’s photo found with Albert George’s (above) collection.  Ruth and A. J. are living next to Jacob and Rebecca George and Richard and Deliha Wilkinson in Mound Prairie Twp., Jasper co., Iowa at the time of the 1860 federal census.

Fayetteville News, March 9, 1893

Silas J. Bivans, born Lynchburg, Ohio, November 19, 1826, died March 9, 1893 at Fayetteville, Ohio.  Married August 31, 1847 to Mary Ann Day who was born in Sardinia, Ohio, January 6, 1830.

Silas Bivans moved to Fayetteville, Ohio in 1874.  He was among the influential and prominent citizens of Perry Township which it is a pleasure to note, always occupied a front position in the advancement of this section.  For his energetic application to business and the promotion of the industries of this community, he deserves more than a passing notice.

He was engaged in merchandise during the 1860's.  He built a woolen factory at this place and was also engaged in the milling business at Chasetown for a number of years, where he met with a loss by fire.

His early days were spent in teaching school, mostly in this county.  He was a contractor and commenced his labors at the age of 17, making this business a success.

He was a devoted member of the Disciples Church which he joined at an early age and of which he was a leading member.  The last song he chose was,  "Let me die like Old Simeon with Jesus in my arms."

He was a Republican and ever true to the party of this choice.

He was chosen Postmaster of this place during Grant's administration, which office he held until his death, except for the four years of Cleveland's administration.  (1869-1885,1889-1893).

He was an enthusiastic and devoted Mason, a charter member of the Marathon Lodge #203.  He was also a member of Chapter and Council, Georgetown, Ohio.

The Legend of the Early Life of Willson Glen and ;Ellen (Smith) [Masters] Roath

-as written by Bessie Dougherty from her memory of hearing about it-

--Bessie was about 93 years old at the time she wrote this--

Ellen and Joseph Masters lived most of their married life in Iowa, where he did carpentry work in newly settled areas, first around Pella and later around Boonville, Iowa, in which area he was killed when serving as a deputy in a Sheriff’s posse

After Joseph's death, Ellen returned to her father's [Seth Smith] home in [Knox co.], Illinois, with her three small children, Caroline, [Bessie's mother), Emmaline and Joseph and lived there until her marriage to Willson Glen Roath.

Ellen was a skilled weaver, and took her loom from farm to farm to weave the wool, produced there, into blankets, flannel, linsey-woolsey (combination of wool and flax) used in children's dresses, or other combinations of wool and flax used in men's clothing.  By this work she was able to support herself and three small children.

It was probably just prior to the Civil War when Willson Glen Roath came from Kentucky to Illinois into the Knox co. area, near Galesburg [Yates City].  He was a skilled carpenter, but occasionally did farm work.  He was a widower with one small son, William, who was four or five years old, at the time when he met Ellen (Smith) Masters, a widow with three small children, Caroline, Emiline and Joseph.  Caroline was slightly younger than William; possibly two or three months.

Wilson Roath met Ellen masters when she was at a farm doing the weaving where he was building a barn.  He admired her pluck and charm.  In the face of his desperate need for someone to care for his own small boy, William, he lost little time in realizing the wisdom of their marriage.  No doubt, Ellen Masters could see the advantage of a settled, well ordered home for all the children concerned.

Ellen's charming personality and Wilson's wholesome good looks did not interfere with the progress of fate, and in due time a marriage ensued that lasted happily until Ellen's death, approximately a half century later.

The four children soon were happily adjusted in the home.  The two older ones shared joint responsibility for the welfare of the two younger ones.  William (or "Billy" as he was called by the family) happily responded to the mother love instantly lavished on him by Ellen.  [In Billy's old age, he said, "Mother never treated me any differently than her own natural born children."]  His relationship with his step-sister, Caroline, was equally happy.  The bond between these two was probably close because of their joint responsibility in caring for the two younger children.

Through their developing years, Billy and Caroline worked smoothly together in managing emergencies.  Throughout their lives there was a mutual bond of trust.  When Billy and Caroline were fifteen years old, Willson Roath met with a logging accident.  A chain broke when a heavy log was being skidded onto the running gears of a wagon, allowing the log to roll back, crushing his thigh.  Infection developed, resulting in many weeks of fever and delirium.  At the time, Ellen was pregnant and also ill with a severe form of malaria [then designated malignant malaria, a type where patient had no days of freedom of symptoms, but was constantly bedfast].

The problem that confronted these adolescents was caring for two disabled parents, 11 years old sister, Emaline, and four year young sons of Ellen and Willson, besides carrying on the farm work and house keeping work, which was done through the long dreary weeks of the late winter, spring and early summer.  Help from kindly neighbors and concerned relatives [that was the custom then] helped, but the responsibility lay on the young shoulders where it was capably carried.
