Quote from John M. May, first lawyer in Mansfield, Richland
County, Ohio,
as found on page 240 of the History of Richland County, Ohio
"Every neighborhood had its bully or chief fighter, and these were pitted against each other like game-cocks. These fights often ended in a general melee, in which whole neighborhoods were sometimes engaged against each other. I remember one fight of this kind which took place on the public square in Mansfield, between the Clearforkers and Blackforkers. The Clearforkers were the fighting men living in the southern portion of the county, in a valley of the Clear Fork, and the Blackforkers were from the northern and eastern portions of the county, living along the Black fork. These two regions were always at enmity, and always getting up fights with each other."
"Among the Blackforkers were the Prossers, Burrels and Pittengers, noted fighting men. Jonathan Prosser was their champion man. Among the Clearforkers were the Brodies, Slaters and Driskells. Of these Stephen Brodie was the Champion."
"At the time referred to, I noticed Stephen Brodie and Bill Slater riding up to the North American corner. They hitched their horses, and there I noticed Burrell and two of the Prosser boys ride up also. Jonathan Prosser jumped off his horse and told Brodie he was going to whip him. I saw there was to be a fight, so I and Sylvenus Day mounted a big stump on the square to see the fun. A crowd gathered and joined hands, forming a ring around the champions. Prosser and Brodie stepped into this ring, stripped and prepared for battle. They looked like giants. "The fight soon commenced and was going on in due order, according to the rules of the ring, when suddenly Bill Slater, who was outside, made a rush to break through the ring. As he came up, Burrell let go and knocked him down like a beef. I thought he was deadied "The ring was re-formed, and the fight continued as before. Pretty soon, however, Slater came to, and rising up, caught Burrel by the leg, threw him down, and, getting on top of him, began pounding him. This brought on a general fight, and all hands went at will. The result was, Clearforkers came out aheadied"

Catherine Brink was born in Waipae [Walpeck Twp., Sussex co.] Township, New Jersey, February 14, 1800. She was one of a family of fourteen children. In 1812 her parents [Thomas & Sarah] removed to Washington co., Pennsylvania, where they lived four years, thence removing to Richland co., Ohio. Here she was married to Robert Prosser, also a Jersey man, on May 25th, 1820. Here they set up housekeeping for themselves with the nearest neighbor three miles away. In the fall of 1837 they moved to Peoria co., Illinois, which co. has ever since been her home. The first night in Peoria co. they stayed with James Harkness, who died in 1878, and with him they lived all winter. In the spring Robert Prosser purchased the farm now owned by Mrs. James Gentle, in Harkness Grove, and there they lived until 1857 when they sold the farm and purchased the residence now occupied by Mrs. Page in the west end of Elmwoodied On the 3rd of June, 1861 grandfather [Robert] Prosser was gathered to his fathers [died]. Grandmother Prosser remained in the house two years longer when she broke up housekeeping and and has since lived with her children. She died November 21, 1881 at age 81 years, 9 months and 7 days at the home of her daughter in Harkness Grove, Peoria co., Illinois.
She was the mother of ten children, three of whom survive her; Mary, widow of James Condry - Catherine, widow of Wm. Harkness, and Hester Ann, wife of Wm. H. Wood, of this place. Grandmother [Catherine] Prosser became a member of the Methodist church when 16 years old and was ever an ernest and steadfast beliver in its teachings. She said had often rode horseback to meeting 3 miles away, carring a baby before and one behind her upon the horse. She died a ripe old age but had daily been but away, mourned by all who knew her as a kind, consistent Christian and earnest friendied She has living twenty-four grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren. Her memory was very retentive and things that happened years ago she could remember distinctly. She had not been inside the church for years but was content with her Bible, her eyesight remaining good till the last. Her reward is sure.
