Tabitha George's grandchildren who died in the civil war:


  Dexter George son of #3.

Dexter C. George died July 29, 1862

"Dexter George got his discharge and left Corinth on the 14th of July 1862, and landed here [Pella, Iowa] on the 20th and died on the 29th of the same."

  Jacob J. George son of #6.
Joined the Union Army before his 15th birthday.

b. April 11, 1849, Elmwood, Peoria co., Illinois. He was only 14 years, 10 months of age when he enlisted at Pella, Iowa on the 11th of February 1864 in Co. K. 33rd Regiment, Iowa Volunteers.~ Jacob died, while at in training, at a hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas from "the result of exposure incidental to Army life", on the 2nd day of September, 1864. Word of his death was received in Pella by Susannah George, his mother, on September 16, 1864.

 

  Riley George son of #6.

Corporal Riley George, was Killed in action by gunshot wound, at the battle of Averasboro, near Black River, North Carolina. A cousin John A. Smith, who served in the same company, was with him at the time, and saw that he had a decent burial. The date of this action was on March the 16th, 1865. His age was 28 years, 11 months 21 days.

  Abel Thornberry George

Born January 29,1808, Highland co., Ohio. Married 1st. Mary Murphy, b. December, 1st, 1812 in Ohio, the daughter of Samuel B. [1792-1853] and Ann (Bevans) Murphy. Abel died May 29, 1888, Red Oak, Iowa.

 

Jacob B. George
Born September 19, 1809, Hillsborough, Highland co., Ohio. Lived at Lynchburg, Ohio where he was a school teacher, before removing to Peoria co., Illinois. In 1839. Married 1st., June 14, 1838, Miss Emaline W. Penington; m. 2nd., Rebecca Bevans. Buried Priarie City, Jasper co., Iowa.

  Elizabeth "Betsy" (George) West

Born June 26, 1811, in Highland co., Ohio. Married February 6, 1831, Clinton co., Ohio John Rand West, a veteran, Surg. 2nd., Reg. Illinois Cavalry. d. June 11, 1894 at Elmwood, Peoria co., Illinois.

 

  Mary "Polly" (George) Smith

Born February 4, 1813, in Highland co., Ohio. Married August 28, 1831, Seth Smith, b. March 12, 1812, Ohio,

After 1838, Seth and Mary "Polly" moved with their family west to Knox co., Illinois, and on to Adams Co., Iowa

15 children in all, were born to this union.

 

  William S. George

Born November 18, 1814, in Fayette or Highland co., Ohio. Married December, 1834 in Highland co., Ohio, Susannah Wilson.
In 1839 the family emigrated to Elmwood, Peoria Co., Illinois and resided there fourteen years. The family came to Marion co. and settled in Lake Prairie Twp., Iowa in the fall of 1855 and engaged in farming. Died February 22, 1899, Pella, Marion co., Iowa.

 

  Rachel (George) Jones

Born 1815, [Highland co.,] Ohio. Married October 6, 1838, in Jackson co., Indiana, William A. Jones, born 1805, W. Virginia. The family was living in Knox co., near Yates City, Illinois at the time of the 1850 census. Removed to Priarie City, Jasper co., Iowa in 1861.

 

  Ellis Barrett George

Born March 21, 1818 in Hillsboro, or Lynchburg, Highland co., Ohio. Married 1st., February 22, 1839, Rhoda A. McDonald, b. Indiana. Ellis and Rhoda migrated from Highland co. Ohio to Knox co., Illinois, ca 1839. Rhoda must have died there as Ellis married 2nd., Malita (McDonald) McKee. Ellis died at Garrison, Nebraska, December 25, 1899.
