John West, son of Thomas & Ann West was born at Long Crendon, Bucks, England, October 28, 1690. He came to America in 1761, * m. 2nd., Sarah Pearson, dau. of Thomas and Margery Smith Pearson. John West died October 5, 1776.

Ten children, of John & Sarah West were all born near Philadelphia, in Chester Co., Pennsylvania .(now Delaware Co.) Pennsylvania. The 1st., born was *Joseph, and the 10th child was Benjamin the painter.

* Joseph West, 1718 - 1802, * m. Jane Owen, b. June 9,1720 & d Dec. 20, 1791. Jane Owen was the dau. of John Owen & Hannah Maris, dau. of George Maris of Chester, Pennsylvania

The fourth child of Joseph & Jane West was Owen West, b.1749, Fairfax Co., Virginia. Owen West * m. Elizabeth Martin It was Owen's & Elizabeth’s [#14th child] son, John, who married #4. Elizabeth George, February 6, 183,in Clinton co., Ohio.

Elizabeth George, b. June 26, 1811, in Highland co., Ohio, where she received a common school education. She married February 6, 1831, Clinton co., Ohio John Rand West, a veteran, Surg. 2nd., Reg. Illinois Cavalry.

John Rand West was born in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, April 3, 1809, and was but one year old when his parents moved to the state of Ohio, and settled on the East fork of the Little Miami River, Ohio. His parents were Owen and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Martin) West, who died soon after their removal to Ohio. - [Owen West's father Joseph, was a older brother to Benjamin West, the artist.]

John & Elizabeth West left Clinton co., Ohio with their six children and provisions and headed westward proceeding to the Ohio River, taking passage on a steamer, traveling via the Ohio, River, Mississippi River, and Illinois River's to Copperas Creek Landing, Ohio.

The water was low and this slowed their journey. When they finally landed they hired wagons and went overland until they came to Knox co., Illinois. They rented a log cabin at Taylors grove, Illinois and spent the winter there. In the spring they rented a farm for one year.

In ca 1848, they settled on 40 acres of land in Elba Twp., Illinois, sec. 35, near Yates City, Illinois. Sometime after John and Elizabeth located on this small purchase of land, they were able to improve this place and erect a fine residence thereon. John continued adding to his original purchase and by the date of his death he owned 740 acres of good land.
Eleven children were born to John and Elizabeth, five were still living in 1878.

John R. West, died March 31, 1885, Elizabeth "Betsy" (George) West, died June 11, 1894 at Elmwood. Both are buried at Elmwood cemetery, Elmwood, Peoria Co., Illinois.

 

Obituary of Elizabeth West

Elizabeth George was born in Highland co., Ohio, June 26, 1811. She was married to John West of Clinton co., Ohio, Feb. 26, 1831. They moved to Knox co., Illinois in 1845, at which place she resided until her death, June 11, 1894, her husband dying March 31, 1884. To them were born eleven children, of whom there are but three living. Henry D. West, Mrs. Robert. Kay and Mrs. W.S. Kleckner. She had 26 living grand-children, and 20 great-grand-children.

Of nine brothers and sisters only two survive her, W. S. George of Pella, Iowa, and Ellis B. George of Lincoln, Nebraska.

On May 14, 1894, while sweeping, she fell and broke one of her limbs, and for the past four weeks she has been confined to her bed. Her relatives did all in their power to relieve her suffering and restore her to health, but all in vain, and on Monday, June 11, 1894, at 9:45 p.m., death came to relieve her of her suffering, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 15 days.

The funeral took place from the house at 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, and was largely attended, E.R. Brown conducting the services. Interment in the Elmwood cemetery.
