Annie was living at 7340 Yates av., Chicago, at the time of her death, February 6, 1936, at the age of 80 years & 10 days. Burial for both was in the John Fulwiler family plot at Lexington, McLean co, Illinois.

An Old Settler Dead - John Fulwiler, an old & highly respected citizen passes away in Phoenix, Arizona

The sad intelligence reached here Saturday evening of the sudden death of John Fulwiler, who was accompanied by his estimable wife from here last December to Phoenix, Arizona, where they went to enjoy the milder winter climate, with the hope that Mr. Fulwiler might be materially benefited by the change and regain some of his lost strength and vigor which has of late been swiftly waning owning to frequent apoplectic strokes, the last of which caused his death Saturday morning, at 6 o’clock. The news of his death was mournfully received by the people of Lexington which place had been his cherished home since coming here in 1842 after leaving the place of his birth in Cumberland co., Pennsylvania, at the age of thirty two, with the exception of an intermission of a few years spent in disposing of his commercial interests in the old Keystone State.

In the early history of Lexington, Mr. Fulwiler was a central figure in its development and had unshaken faith in its future, believing that the small country village was destined to become the leading metropolis of central Illinois. He made an addition to the original town and spent much time and energy in promoting the general good of the town and shaping it for the very important place it was to occupy in the heart of on of the greatest states of the union.

The establishing of the firm of Okeson, Fulwiler & co. marked an epoch in general merchandising in Lexington which has rarely been approached for continuity, the present business in the growth of the old stand being a direct outgrowth of the old firm, and is now managed by Mr. Fulwiler’s third son, J. Alvin.

Mr. Fulwiler was a prominent man in the country and participated in politics to some extent on the Republican side. His advice and counsel were sought by everybody and his opinions were eighty with his fellowmen. He was a citizen Lexington is proud to claim. As he now lies stately motionless, calm in death with chastened charms lingering in the minds of the great many who knew him well, the sorrow of their hearts paying touching tribute to his memory, his life-work pictures an ineffable story of grandeur. His love for wife and children was beautifully blended in his noble character, imperiled with Christian obedience to church and home.

As a result of his marriage in Pennsylvania in 1834 to Miss Nancy Mahon, ten children were added to their family of which three are now dead. Those who survive are as follows: Emily Whitehall of Ogden, Utah - David M., of Chicago - John A. of Bloomington, Ill. - Laura Murphy (Mrs. W. J.) wife of the president of the Arizona Land and Coal co. at Phoenix, Ariz. - Julia Creighton, Phoenix, Ariz. - J. Alvin, successor to his father in business at Lexington and William A. Fulwiler, manager of a land and improvement company at Phoenix, Arizona. - Anna the wife of Henry Robison & the mother of three children died and was buried at the Lexington cem. before her parents.

Both of the parents died in Pennsylvania. Abraham having a say in the dividing of Perry co with Cumberland. John m. Mary (Nancy) Mahon the dau. of David Mahon, also of Cumberland co., Pennsylvania.

AN EARLY SETTLER DIED LAST WEEK

Elmer Hurst [Hirst], who was among the early settlers in the east part of the county, south of Elrod but who has been a county charge during the past year, died at the county farm last Thursday night. Robert Beatty, an old neighbor, came after the body Tuesday and the same was interned in the south Elrod cemetery on Tuesday.

Some years ago Mr. Hurst was among the well-to-do pioneers of this section, but later he experienced a stroke of apoplexy and during the past year has spent most of his time with Wm. Patterson on the Sharp farm just north of town. Last week he had another stroke and on Wednesday evening was taken back to the county home and placed in charge of a nurse. Deceased had no relatives living in the vicinity and was about sixty years old. <>
