Obituary of Abel T. George ~~ Red Oak Newspaper ~ Sunday, June 3, 1892
At his late residence, six miles north of Red Oak, [Iowa] Abel T. George, after a painful illness of several months duration, passed to his final reward in the early morning of May 29, at the age of 84 years. He was a man of great vigor of constitution and of unconquerable energy, and had been identified with the development of three states. Born in Highland co., Ohio, in 1808, he moved from the vicinity of Hillsborough, Ohio, to Illinois in 1839, settling near Farmington, where he lived 44 years, moving to Montgomery Co., Iowa, in 1882. He was of Scotch descent and of Quaker stock, and had a love for liberty and a hatred of oppression that made him an earnest worker for the uplifting of mankind. His life was a long and useful one. His greatest happiness was in adding to the joys of those with whom he came in contact. This spirit was still manifest in the last hours of his sickness, when full energy to maintain the accustomed activity of his busy life, he persisted in helping himself lest others might be burdened with duty. Blessed be the memory of those having grown grey in faithful service and who have added to the sum of man's prosperity and happiness and have entered into their final rest of God's blessed hereafter. |
