These mills, first in Highland co., were built by Jesse Baldwin on Factory branch of Rocky fork in 1805/6 and proved to be an extensive and successful undertaking. In 1862, David raised a company of soldiers for the Union army of which he was elected captain and which subsequently became part of the 89th reg. Ohio Vol. infantry. The great battle in which Capt. David M. Barrett took part as commander of Co. I was the famous engagement of Chickamauga, September 19, 1863. During the afternoon of the 20th, the 89th went into the hottest of the fight; and, with the 21st., Ohio and 22nd., Michigan, held its position against odds until dark, when they were surrounded and all captured. Captain Barrett was now in for a round of experiences in those awful dens of starvation and torture called "Southern prison pens." He was taken to the notorious Libby prison at Richmond, Virginia, where he was held about eight months, and spent more time in other southern prisons in all he was held about 18 months. - At the close of the war he was released and he returned home to Highland co., Ohio and picked up where he left off, Richard Barrett went on to become township assessor & served as township clerk as well as serving on the board of education for about twenty years. For many years he was extensively engaged in the live stock Industry and owned 700 acres of land, and at one tome held in excess of 1000 acres. Sally; Barrett d. July 21, 1901. David M. Barrett d. Absalom operated a woolen mill in Indiana, where his children learned carding & weaving. Mary found this experience very handy when she moved to the frontier. The mill burned and was a total loss, so near the end of the Civil War he made a trip to Kansas and found good land for sale cheap. Parties of young Quakers soon began moving to western Leavenworth County where a colony of Friends was established.
The Georges and the Hollingworths, as many other Friends, were busy in operation of the "Underground Railroad" for moving negro slaves northward to freedom.
In March of 1863, Isaiah & Mary & minor children, William Alvin & Robert Barclay were granted cert. of transfer to Kansas MM, Leavenworth co., Kansas. They left with several of Marys brothers & sister and their families, by train in November of 1864, crossed the Mississippi river and proceeded on the Hannibal & St. Jo Railroad to St. Joseph, Missouri and on to Leavenworth, by river boat, according to the memory of some of the younger members of the party. They found Leavenworth threatened by Prices Confederates, so they left town as quickly as possible and spent the winter in the western part of Leavenworth Co., near McLouth.
Isaish purchased a farm there, and later sold it for twice what he had paid for it and bought 80 acres on Fall Creek south east of Springdale, where he and Mary spent the remainder of their lives. Mary cared for her family, spinning & weaving their clothes. she also taught school and was prominent in the Grange. She had very red hair. She told her children that she was descended from the Pembertons who were short-lived people and so expected to die young. She was correct, as she d. 222. William Lupton George
(Jesse 3, Jesse 2, Ellis 1)b. October 11, 1841, Marion co., Indiana. m. January 15, 1868, Beech Grove., MM, Indiana, Lucinda S. Scott, b. October 27, 1847, at Valley Mills, Marion co., Indiana, daughter of Isum & Martha Ann ( Carson) Scott of Marion co., Indiana. September 17, 1890 gct Lightning Creek MM, Cherokee co., Kansas. After their marriage they lived for some time with his uncle James "Jimmy" George, and cared for him until his death. Presumably this was James, son of Jesse George & Mary Lupton. Jimmy George was a shoe-maker and made shoes for the family. they didnt make left & right shoes in that day, but both were straight and worn on one foot one day, on the other the next. Ida, daughter of William L. and Lucinda, remembered "Uncle James" as small of stature and quick, and that he deeded all his farm to her father, William l., and to "the adopted daughter Jane." She said that he also had an adopted son that he named Ellis.
In 1890, William & Lucinda traded their farm near Valley Mills, Indiana for land and a poor house, "sight unseen," in Labette co., Kansas. They took household goods in a freight car and moved by train. They did not stay there long but moved to Lowell, Cherokee co., Kansas, where their daughter, Ida was married in August of 1893 in the Quaker Church. The family had just moved again, this time to Wyandotte, Indian Terr., where the Friends had a church at the Government Indian School.
William served almost 25 years as a Friends minister in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. After a number of years at Wyandotte, they went on to Bethel, a Friends church a few miles east of Capron, Woods co., Oklahoma. They returned to the mission at Wyoandotte in 1908. Lucinda became ill in 1912 and they had to leave and served at Ringwood, Major co., Oklahoma for several years. In September of 1917 they went to Cherokee, Alfalfa Co., Oklahoma, where they served for a short time as house parents of the girls boarding school at Stella Academy. That was the year of the serious influenza epidemic; the girls had it and William caught it from them and d. in November of 1917. After his death, Lucinda made her home with her daughter Ida.
Lucinda lived until 1934 so her granddaughter, Lois George Hull, remembers her quite well:
"She had beautiful wavy hair, white when I knew her, worn in a coil at the back. She always wore a poke bonnet style hat - Aunt Ida knew how to make them & trim them so they looked nice. She also wore long skirts - that was the time of the flappers with short skirts and bobbed hair and cloche hats. Grandma was a woman of determination and firm convictions. She was kindly and always busy - she made quilts & braided rugs. She studied her Bible daily & spoke in the Quaker way. she never argued or spoke ill of a person - her harshest criticism of anyone was to say, He [she] is a very peculiar person."
Lois Hulls memories of her granpa William L. were very few;
"But I can see him yet coming up the walk to Aunt Idas house in Alva [Okla.] with a huge white turkey flung over his shoulder, his white beard and white hair blowing in the wind. Coming into the house he said I got a fowl for Christmas. I had never heard a turkey called a fowl. That was in 1915. Also I had never seen a white turkey. I was 6 years old then."
