Blount Co. TN, formerly State of Franklin,
formerly Washington Co. NC, formerly Washington Co. VA.
All of Tennessee began as one single county: Washington County, North Carolina.
Created in 1777 from the western areas of Burke and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina, Washington County had as a precursor a Washington District of 1775-76, which was the first political entity named for the Commander-in-Chief of American forces in the Revolution.Pioneer John Craig built a stockade fort in 1785. The Indians were continually at war with all settlers during this period of frontier development. Because his stockade was of such dimensions that an entire settlement could find protection for long periods at a time he attracted more settlers to his site. It was located near the famous old War Trail down which Scotch-Irish immigrants poured from Pennsylvania and Virginia after the Revolutionary War ended in 1783.
North Carolina opened a land office for the sale of these "western lands" in an attempt to raise funds to pay debts which they owed their war veterans and the federal government.
Many frontiersmen who had been in this territory prior to the opening of the land office had grown to feel that the land was theirs by right of claim by occupancy, and they had been demanding more protection from the Indians which North Carolina had not been able to grant. The settlers called a convention and formed a new State of Franklin, with John Sevier as governor. He formed a treaty with the Indians and set boundary lines. North Carolina refused to recognize the treaty nor the new state and this caused the Indians to renege on their treaty which NC was not honoring, and many more settlers were killed. After a few years the US Govt sided with NC.and the State of Franklin was dissolved.
The predominant religion was Presbyterian and an account of an attack by 500 Indians is recored in the History of New Providence Pres.Church Death was an almost daily visitor, as the Cherokees continued raiding for many years after settlements were established. The area which later comprised the Mint community was the site of an Indian massacre in 1788.
As early as 1788 the Methodist Episcopal Church had preachers in what is now Blount Co. William Burke was forced to flee toward Watauga Settlement in upper East TN (then NC) when he found the Cherokees were on the war path. They attacked and killed the settlers at Gillespie Station which became known as Burnt Station.
December 1787
-The inhabitants of the Western County requested the North Carolina Legislation create a new state called Tennessee.
Gillespie's Fort
(1790's), Knoxville Tennessee
A settlers' fort attacked and destroyed by Cherokee Indians
Afterwards it was known as Burnt Station.
"Gillespie Station"(aka Burnt Station or Gillespie's Fort) was named after William Gillespie and built abt. 1785. It was located on the Little River in what is now Blount County, Tennessee.
On October 15, 1788 the Indians attacked the fort and captured 28 women and children. Thomas Brown, was seriously injured in this fight and his family captured (according to his 1818 Rev. War Pension affidavit). The captives were later exchanged for Indian prisoner by Gen Sevier (for a lb.of salt according to Brown family legend).
b.c1760 Berks co., Pennsylvania m. Mary ----------, b. in Virginia. Silas migrated to NC with his parents where he resided from 1786 to 1836. This area. later became Jefferson county E. Tennessee.
Silas and Mary George lived in North Carolina before Tennessee was a state and the land where they resided was later located in Jefferson and Blount Counties East Tennessee. Silas died in the 1830's and Mary appears in the Bradley County Tennessee1840 census (represented by age and sex) and by name in the Bradley County 1850 census. She is living with William T. and Jane George Wood. There are records of a John George, son of Silas George. I have no single document that states that Martha Ann George Logan is the daughter of Silas George, but have a heap of substantiating material. From my family's history, I know that Martha Ann George Logan had two sisters: Mary (Polly) George who married Daniel Welch and Rebecca George who married a man named Reed.

William - son of James and Jennett is known to have had three wives. One
Isabella Houston, second Rose unknown, and a third Mary Unknown as I recall. This William eventually settled in present Blount County, TN circa 1787. He had a huge number of descendants.William had many children - the identity of the mother(s) is lost. James and Jennett's three sons James, John, and William as well as daughter Elizabeth migrated to present Blount County, Tennessee circa 1787. James was killed by a Cherokee War party in 1792. John died of unknown causes in 1796. William lived on til 1830 as I recall. William is believed to have been the wealthest resident of early Blount County. James, William, and Elizabeth's descendents are well documented.
