He had
come Down Town This Morning to See A Doctor and Expired While Waiting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Charles Prosser, died this morning
at 9:35 in the office of Dr. Miller while waiting to see the doctor. He has not been feeling well for some
time and yesterday suffered considerable from a bad heart. Mrs. Prosser had insisted that he come
to see a doctor this morning and they had drove down town and he had gone to
the post office and to a number of other places and then they went up to the office. Dr. Miller was not in at the time and
they had set down to wait. While
waiting for the doctor he and his wife were talking when without warning he was
stricken with an attack of heart failure and died before any thing could be
done. Dr. Miller came up the
stairs almost immediately and after an examination he pronounced him dead. Mr. Prosser has been janitor of the
school house in this city for a number of years and was well liked by all. He was always ready to help the
children at school with any thing that he could and was always kind and
considerate.
My father, William N. Ergenbright moved with his parents from Pella, Iowa to a farm north of Barney in 1871. After a year or so, there being no school closer than St. Charles, his father gave an acre of land and helped build a log schoolhouse where my dad got his education. Later he helped build the railroad through Lorimor. My mother was working for a family by the name of Abe Dudney, earning $.50 a week. They boarded some of the railroad men. That was where my dad and mother first met. This was about 1875 or 76 and they were married in 1877.
They and some of the other young people rode on the first train that went over the railroad. They always lived on a farm until about 1910. Dad bought the cafe in Lorimor and later a grocery store on the north side of Lorimor main street....Uncle John Ergenbright had a livery barn in Lorimor about 1896 or 1897. It was located where the Roseman¹s and now the Eginoire Feed Store now is...<
Pioneer - Jan. 11, 1917
Died, at the home near this city, on
Tuesday, January 2, 1916, Mrs. Samantha Bevans. Mrs. Bevans was born February 6, 1839, at Peoria [co.],
Illinois. She came to the state of
Washington with her husband and family in 1889, and made her home in Stevenson
ever since except for a year or two which she spent in Portland with some of
her children.
Her husband William Bevans, died in
1890[1], and she has since lived a widow.
She is survived by nine children, five sons and four daughters. she had 38 grandchildren living and 7
great grandchildren.
The old Bevans home was on the
Columbia river just east of Stevenson, but it was sold at the time the North
Bank railroad was being built, the house having been torn down to make room for
the railroad. the place does not
look much like it did when the family lived there. But the deceased lady lived there, saw the city of Stevenson
start, waver a while as if to see whether it should live or die, and finally
take a start and grow to its present proportions. when she first came here this was a decidedly frontier
community, no railroads, wagon roads, stores or business houses of any
kind. Travel was by small boat or
steamboat, and the nearest trading point was Cascade Locks with The Dalles as
the banking center and the place where most of the business was done. She lived to see many changes in the
community, state and died full of years and honors surrounded by her children
and grandchildren. She was laid to
rest Thursday afternoon at the old home place where several members of the
family were already buried.
Oliver Troth in Southport, Illinois
Oliver Troth, the tenth and last
child of John and Phoebe Bevans Troth was born on February 24, 1853 in
Illinois. He was the youngest
brother of William Troth who settled in Galesburg. He grew up on the Southport farm with nine older brothers
and sisters and he was the one selected to stay home and take over the
farm. We don't know who made the
selection. Oliver married Phoebe
O. Lawrence in Southport on Dec. 24, 1878 and they began their married life in
a cabin that he and his father had built West of the big house along the road
to Elmwood in the timber. When
Oliver's father, John, died on May 8, 1891, he moved his family into the
"big house" with his mother, Phoebe. Seeing that the two women couldn't get along with one
kitchen, Oliver built a second one for his mother in which she cooked. I think that Oliver's aunt Lovinia
lived with them for awhile too.
She eventually lost her mind and died in 1896. Lovinia never married.
Oliver himself died in 1892. He took his own life with a gunshot
wound to the head. He didn't die
immediately so he sat down in his kitchen rocking chair with his wife and
mother nearby and bled to death.
The kids came home from school that day to find him there in his
chair. Raymond was 9 years
old. Oliver's mother died in 1895.
There are several accounts of what
led up to Oliver's death which I will not go into here. Raymond was loathe to speak of it.
After Oliver died his brothers
swooped down and tried to take the farm away from Phoebe, sell it and divide
the proceeds. However, Oliver had
a tight will and he made his son-in-law, Erastus Lawrence his executor. Mr. Lawrence was a shrewd old
fart and he retained the services of a lawyer and saw to it that Phoebe
maintained control of the farm. To
do so, he had to assume legal guardianship of the six children although they
remained in residence with their
mother. The boys farmed the land
until Olive married Lee McCoy at which time he took over the farming and
eventually bought the farm.
Phoebe (Lawrence) Troth
Phoebe Lawrence Troth was born on
Sept. 2, 1860, and raised on a farm approximately 1 1/2 mile south of the Troth
farm on what was called "dogtown lane". The farm consisted of 160 acres and it featured a 10 acre
orchard. Her father, Erastus,
earned a good living selling apples and people drove their teams and wagons for
miles to his farm in the autumn to buy apples.
Following Oliver's death, her father
and her sons continued to operate the farm as they grew up. Harry, the oldest, farmed it until he
married and got a farm of his own.
Then John farmed for awhile until he enrolled in college at Bradley U.
in Peoria.. Then Raymond took over
while still in high school and he farmed until he could enroll at Bradley and
his brother Dick took over. Then,
John married and Dick didn't like to farm so Raymond had to quit school and
come back to his mother's farm which he operated until he married in 1912.
Phoebe broke a hip in the early
1940's and was bed-ridden until her death on Nov. 27, 1953. She eventually lost her mind. Olive took care of her until her death. There were no nursing homes in those
days. <
Anamosa Eureka - Nov. 23, 1905
Mr. L. A. Bevans, a former guard at
the prison and a resident of Anamosa for many years, was found dead in bed at
the hotel in Coggon yesterday morning.
He was a bridge contractor and was engaged in pile driving on the C., A.
& N. The evening previous he
seemed to be unusually good spirits and retired about nine o¹clock. Wednesday morning he did not appear for
breakfast at six o¹clock and Mr. Jack Mudd, one of his hands, requested the
landlord to call him. Raps on the
door solicited no response and the landlord stepped in and endeavored to awaken
him. Receiving no answer he
notified Mr. Mudd and both went to his room and found him dead, apparently
having passed away several hours before.
A physician was summoned immediately and gave it as his opinion that Mr.
Bevans died of heart disease. The
body was brought to Anamosa for funeral arrangements. The deceased was a man of excellent record in Anamosa,
upright and industrious and greatly respected by all. Mr. Bevans was 58 years old.
Anamosa Eureka - Sept. 6, 1934
Winafred Ann Boxwell, daughter of
John and Amelia Larned Boxwell, of the states of Maryland and Virginia
respectively, was born in Peoria county, Illinois, May 18, 1849, and departed
this earthly life August 29, 1934, at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 11
days. She was the last of her
father¹s family of nine children.
At the early age of nine years she was left an orphan and so experienced
all the hardships and loneliness of such a life. She was united in marriage with Lewis A. Bevans in
1869. Mr. Bevans passed on in
1905. Four children were born to
this union. After reaching manhood
and young womanhood, Fernandes the son and Pearl the youngest daughter preceded
their mother in death. The two
daughters, Adella of Anamosa and Sue of Los Angeles, Calif., remain to grieve
for the separation from a most loving, devoted mother. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. &
Mrs. Bevans moved to a farm near Morning Sun, Iowa, where they lived until they
moved to Anamosa in 1886... Mrs.
Bevans was a ardent lover of nature, especially of flowers and birds. These last years with more leisure from
household cares, she has found happy companionship with the birds for whom she
provided food and water daily...
Burial was in the Riverside cemetery, Anamosa, Iowa.
editor and publisher of this agricultural journal which was published in
Chicago.
In 1889 Milton and Alice donated 300
acres of land south of Chicago, on which to build a home for homeless boys.
Such a home was started in Chicago in 1875 and operated in the Norwood Park
Hotel. This was the beginning of the Glenwood School for Boys. In 1889 the
school was relocated to the 300 acre parcel donated by Milton George, 30 miles
south of Chicago. The school was and still is one of the most prominent
industrial and agricultural schools in the country. In 1987 the school
celebrated its 100th birthday. The original building on campus was named after
Mr. George, and the Milton George Building stands today having been converted
for staff residence use.
During Milton and Alice¹s life they
were always occupied in the management and affairs of the school as they had
been in its formation. Though Milton was not the founder, he was one of the
early Trustees of the school. Milton and Alice did not have any children of
their own but they had hundreds of boys to fill their lives over many a year.
Murphy Garner
b. December 22, 1838, Hillsborough,
Ohio. His mother Lucinda Murphy was not married and still living home at the
time. His last name was supposed to be "George" however due to
embarrassment he was given the last name of "Garner", and his Murphy
grandparents raised him. In 1839 or 40 the Murphy¹s and Able George family
moved to Fulton Co., Illinois Abel T. George built a lovely home for his wife
Mary and their children. Ferdinand lived on with his grandparents until he was
old enough to do for himself. Lucinda married Isaac Anson and stayed in Ohio,
living near the town of Xenia, Ohio located in Green Co. Ohio. Lucinda and
Isaac¹s son Milton Anson, Anson kept in touch with Ferdinand as did his other
half brothers, Milton and Terry M., sons of Abel T. The boys apparently knew
that Ferdinand was their half brother and they were close, however this
information was withheld from Abel¹s daughters as in old letters, they refer to
him as Cousin.
Ferdinand m. February 14, 1868,
Susan Greenwell, b. June 24, 1846, Covington, Kentucky Boone Co., Kentucky, the
dau. of Robert and Martha (Mills) Greenwell. The story, handed down from the
older generations, tells of how Ferdinand was a very lovely, but a very sad
man, as he and his father lived in the Farmington area and even went to the
same church, but Abel did not or could not show any relationship. Milton always
felt so sorry about Ferdinand that he had strong feelings about helping other
boys from broken homes. Perhaps this was a inner drive that led Milton to work
so much with the Glenwood Boys home.
(We are indebted to the Lenox Time - Table, for the following):
-- J. West Jones --
A beautiful ending of a long and
useful life, with wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, his
Masonic brothers and scores of friends gathered in the home he loved so well,
the last rites for J. West Jones were held Sunday afternoon. Men in all stations of life were
present, The old men, who knew him as a young fellow; young men who had known
his happy smile since their childhood, men who had associated with him in a business
way, all were there to pay tribute to a man who had been such a factor in the
making of Lenox.
All over this section of the state
the name of J. West Jones has been a familiar one, for Mr.. Jones had been an
auctioneer for fifty years and had cried sales all through the southwest part
of the state.
On the tenth of last October he
invited his friends into the home on his seventy-eight birthday, just to swap
stories of the old days spent together.
Just the simplicity of the affair made it a charming one and no guest
enjoyed it more than Mr. Jones himself.
On Sunday in the same rooms, banked with flowers, with the same friends
and scores of others, the final words of parting were spoken. Rev. E. C. Miller of the Christian
church read the scripture and made the prayer, a talk by Mr. Jones¹ life long
friend and Masonic brother, Olin Geo. Van Houten, reviewed the close friendship
of the two through the past half century and told many intimate details of the
Church, civic and fraternal life of the deceased. Rev. Stroad, of the Methodist Church, took for his topic,
³The fullness of Life². A quartet
furnished the music.
John West Jones was born at Yates
City, Knox County, Illinois, Oct. 10, 1848, and moved to Iowa with his parents
when a very small boy and here he grew to manhood. He was married in 1875 to Margaret Smith at Prairie City,
Jasper co., Iowa, and to this union were born four children. The wife and two daughters passed on a
number of years ago. The two sons
Carey M. and Orval A. Jones survive.
In 1888 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Virginia A. Allen. To this union was born, one son, Harry
A. Jones. The widow and three sons
and their wives together with six stepsons and their wives, and a number of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive.
Virginia A. Jones
It is a feeling of sadness that this
paper records the passing of another of our older residents and a thoroughly
good woman, Mrs. J. West Jones.
For months it has been known that the end was approaching and her family
have spent much time at her bedside, where she was a most patient
sufferer. Since the death of her
husband in May, Mrs. Jones has been in failing health.
Mrs. Jones passed away at her home
in this city Friday, September 30, at noon. Services were held Sunday afternoon at the home, conducted
by Rev. E. C. Miller, assisted by Rev. E. R. Stroud and she was laid to rest by
the side of her husband in the Lenox cemetery.
Virginia A. Gatlin, daughter of
James & Nancy Gatlin, was born in Illinois, Sept. 25, 1848, and departed
this life in Lenox on September 30, 1927, at the age of 79 years and five days.
She was married in Brighton, Iowa,
March 25, 1869 to George V. Allen.
They moved to Fairfield in April of 1879 and then to Lenox on her
birthday, September 25, 1880. Thus
she lived in Lenox for over 47 years.
They were among the early settlers in Lenox, where Mr. Allen operated
the Lenox mill. To this union were
born seven children: *Horace D.,
Grace M., Frank G., Charles J., R. Rush, Ralph J. and George V., all of whom
are living, with the exception of one daughter, Grace, who was married
September 10, 1889, to J. N. Kanoff and died January 11, 1902. Mr. Allen died in Lenox, November 13,
1883.
Virginia Allen was married November
27, 1888 to J. West Jones, who was one of the very earliest of the Lenox
Pioneers and for a great many years was a leading auctioneer of Iowa. To this union was born one son, Harry
A. Jones, who still survives.
All of the above named boys have
visited the home recently and all of them except Frank & George Allen, who
live in Los Angeles, were here for the service, several being accompanied by
their wives. Besides the nine boys
and their wives there are 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The deceased was the eldest of nine children
and is also survived by six sisters....
Notes: The Lenox paper for the week of May 26,
1927 is missing and is the one which would have contained
J. West Jones' obituary. Orval A.
Jones was appointed executor.
Letter regarding the Death of Elizabeth (George)
Calahan, written by dau., Leona Ruth Wolaver
Jefferson, Texas - August 16, 1922
Dear Pat [O'Brian],
Our mother died Monday night about
7:45 in the evening. She took sick Saturday night with an aching in her breast.
We went to the Doctor Sunday and he said it was Acute Indegestion. We gave her
the medicine and thought she was getting better. Monday evening after six
o'clock she said "I belive I will go to bed." She went in and
undressed herself and hung up her clothes. Pretty soon the boys came in and
were talking to her must have been about seven o'clock, she told them the
aching had left her breast but she was weak. They ate supper and Leigh went in
and leaned down to see if she was asleep and she was breathing alright. That
must have been about 7:30. We thought that she was all right and were going to
bed, but Mark went to her bed to make sure and she was dead. It was a alful
shock. I belive it was heart trouble, after all.
We buried her in a dove colored
brocaded velvet casket and she looked so sweet. When I can I am going to bring
her back to Norwich and put her beside Daddy. She wanted so much to be buried
there. With the strike on I wouldn't dare to start out with her.
Saturday night when she was taken
sick, she thought she was going to die and she asked me to write to all you
folks and tell you good-by for her. So will you show this letter to Gene and
Frank & Hazel and Jim and Maud, Harry and Nell. I will write to Gerty and
Mildred. She thought an alful lot of all of you and used to wish she could see
you again. She didn't get to Jefferson to have the deed of her place made out
to me so I will have to have it probated again. I wish you would see to renting
it to some one who you think won't harm it. I want to sell it as soon as I get
title to it and then move her back there and put up a head stone. Then what is
left we will divide. You can rent it for six dollars a month, the same as last
year.
She went so sudden I just [can't
belive it.](?) Every day I go about the house I see her things and its awful
hard.
MRS. VOLUMIA BEARD - 1852 - 1904
One of Lenapah¹s most Loved Women died Friday
Friday morning at 2 O¹clock, Mrs.
Volumia (George) Beard died at her home in Lenapah, after an illness of several
years. Mrs. Beard was born in Knox co., Illinois, March 17, 1852. On October
15th 1873, she married in Prairie City, Iowa to William F. Beard. She moved
with her husband to Lenapah, Indian Territory, about sixteen years ago, where
she has ever since made her home. Her husband is a brother of Mrs. J. B. Smith,
of this city. She is survived by her husband, one brother [Albert L. George]
and one sister [Elizabeth Ann (George) Calahan]. No children were born of the
union.
Mrs. Beard was a conscientious
Christian woman, loved by all who knew her for her beautiful character and
sweet, unselfish disposition. She was a member of the Christian church and was
known for her untiring efforts in furthering the cause of the One to whom she
had so long looked for a final end to her earthly suffering. She had been ill
with cancer for several years. Last winter she was taken to Dubuque, Iowa, for
an operation. This failing to do her any material good, she was operated on in
Kansas City, about four months ago. Since that time she and all her loved ones
have recognized the inevitable fate that was swiftly bearing down upon her.
Still, through all her suffering, she never complained that the cup was too
full of bitterness and when she finally died amid the heartbroken loved ones
who gathered at her bedside to receive her last blessing, she seemed only to be
drifting peacefully out into the land where care and suffering never come. The
body was brought here for burial. The funeral was held at the grave side in
Elmwood cemetery [Coffeyville, Kansas]. The services were conducted by Rev.
Ellis . Purlee.
26, 1885 in Talmadge, Nebraska, Elizabeth Campbell dau. of Mathrew Campbell and
Sophia Barton. Elizabeth was a school teacher in Nebraska when she met and
married George. They were married along with George's brother William and their
sister, in a triple wedding. In a story told by George's daughter, Florence,
the two brothers and their sister Annie left Ohio and went to live in Nebraska.
They moved into a place near the Campbell family and George apparently started
to date Cora Campbell, but later switched to her sister, Elizabeth, and William
picked up Cora.
When they were married, Annie married Charley Russel.
Her folks thought she was too young to get married, but she told them,
"she would 'grow older' and besides the boys didn't need her to keep house
any longer."
Marriage Notes for GEORGE BIVANS and ELIZABETH
CAMPBELL [Wsbivans.FTW]
George Greenbury Bivans born May
16, 1858, in Georgetown, Ohio.
It is believed that George and Elizabeth moved to
Colorado in 1887 to take advantage of free land that was being offered to
settlers at that time. Their daughter, Florence relates this story:
I do imagine covered wagon was the only way to get
down to Boston, Colorado, I don't think there was any transportation from
Lincoln there. They took a claim but never stayed long enough to get the title.
They first lived in a dug out (cellar) but when I was born (Aug. 2, 1888), they
had moved into a little place called Boston, Las Animas Co., into a sod house
with a dirt floor. Mother said I fell out of bed and got dirt in my mouth.
We do not know where this claim was, but suspect it
was near the town of Boston. George's brother, Americus also seems to have
staked a claim next to his. The town of Boston had been platted in 1886 and
incorporated in 1887, and had a post office until 1893. Towns had sprung up in
many locations in this area in order to provide services for the farmers within
easy access of 3-5 miles. Boston was established 18 miles from the Kansas line
and 17 1/2 miles north of No Man's Land (the neutral strip). An 1887 map show
the town situated on the headwaters of a small tributary of an unnamed creek,
probably Sand Arroyo on what must be a bit of highlands. A road crossed from
northeast to the south. The old trail to Santa Fe had crossed the corner of
Colorado along the Cimarron River itself, south of Boston. Boston had a
reputation for being one of the roughest towns on the plains. It grew faster
than the neighboring towns to become the largest trading center for miles
around. It had a three story hotel, four or five saloons, several stores and
other businesses, a post office and three weekly newspapers. The hotel, The
Boston House, was advertised as the finest west of Wichita.
For a while the law in Boston was Cornelius Smith,
alias William Cornelius, a reformed horse thief, who later reverted to his old
ways. In October 1888 he was indicted for stealing two horses...an action that
ended his career as a lawman. Bill Thompson (said to be an alias for Charley
Hall) a notorious 'regulator', employed by several big cattle outfits to keep
rustling and other depredations under control, often came to Boston.
Counties," by Morris F. Taylor, Colorado Magazine 55:111-132, 1978.)
Elizabeth told her children a story of how she once
met the infamous, Billy the Kid. There are two versions of the story,
Florence's:
I think while they still lived in the dugout, Father
(George) drove 70 miles north to get coal and a cowboy came and asked to lay on
the floor and sleep. Mother said he slept sound all night, got up and thanked
her and left. She sat by her bed with hand on gun. Perhaps that was Billy the
Kid. He was captured around there.
and John's:
At one time, Billy the Kid was in the area. Mother
happened to be home alone when he knocked at the door. She tried not to act
scared but asked if he wanted to come in. She was fixing stew and expecting the
men folks home any minute, and invited him in to have some. He replied,
"Don't mind if I do". He ate well, then dozed in a chair, guns on
lap, for about an hour, he awoke, and left as suddenly as he had arrived.
At the time, the panhandle of what is now Oklahoma,
did not belong to any state and subsequently there was no established law. It
was known commonly as No Man's Land. No Man's Land was notorious for its
blizzards. John relates this story:
Father, with Uncle Americus, drove down to the
Panhandle of Oklahoma and was caught in a great blizzard and turned the wagon
over and slept under it for shelter. This was either in 1888 or '89. They had
gone to get wood. They had heard of a herd of deer near their claim, but had
not seen any. On leaving, Mother was instructed to shoot a deer if she got a
chance. Later, the herd of deer walked slowly through the area near the house.
Mother took the gun, and was ready to shoot, but when she saw the expression of
the eyes of the lead deer, she decided she couldn't shoot him! When the men
returned, they razzed her about it.
Once when Charles, John's older brother, was sitting
outside playing, his mother saw a rattlesnake close by. She got a shovel and
killed it in time to save the baby.
The George Bivans family left Boston for Trinidad in
1889. His brother, Americus, was already in Trinidad.
A cousin of Elizabeth's, Bill Day, was living in
Trinidad and was the corps Sergeant Major at the local Salvation Army. George
and family joined the church. One evening, during an Open Air meeting, a local
saloon keeper had all of the men arrested, including George. They were tried
the following Monday and found guilty. No one had the money to pay the fine so
they all went back to jail. A local business man is said to have taken the case
to the Colorado Supreme Court and won the right to hold religious services. The
story goes, that the city of Trinity was ordered to pay the Salvation Army,
$15,000, which is no small sum in this day and time, but in the late 1800's it
was a fortune!
During their stay in Trinidad, George went to hear
the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth, speak in St. Louis. After the
meeting George got in line to meet him. Apparently, George was wearing his S.A.
uniform, because when Booth shook his hand and realized that he was a soldier
he said, "Soldiers should salute!"
In 1893 after the death of his father, Silas, George
moved the family back to Chasetown, Ohio. His mother, Ruth, lived with them
until her death in 1904. They had four more children while living here.
In 1901, George moved the family to Guthrie,
Oklahoma, to take part in the 'running' for the homesteads.
