L2. JOSEPH LOOMIS
b. probably 1588 in England, s. of John
and Agnis Loomis, m. 30 June
1614 in Messing, Co. of Essex, England, Mary White. He d. 25 Nov. 1658 at Windsor, Conn. His wife, Mary
(White) Loomis, was dau. of Robert and Bridget (Allgar) White of Messing, Co.
of Essex, England, who were m. 24 June 1585. Her mother, Bridget (Allgar)
White, was bap. 11 Mar 1562, dau. of Wm. Allgar, Co. of Essex Eng. Mary
was probably a sister-in-law of John Porter, another prominent Windsor,
Connecticut settler. Mary Loomis d. 1652.
Joseph
Loomis was a woolen-draper in Braintree, Essex Co., England. He sailed from
London, England 11 April 1638, on the ship "Susan and Ellen,"
arrived Boston, Mass. 17 July 1638. Records indicate he stayed about a year in
Dorchester, Mass. Town records of Windsor, Conn. show that on 2 Feb. 1640, he
was granted 21 acres from the Plantation adjoining Farmington River on the west
side of the Conn. River. This acreage included the site of the first English
settlement made in Conn. Also there were several large tracts of land on the
east side of the Conn., partly from the town and partly purchased. Rev. Ephraim
Huet arrived in Windsor, Conn. 17 Aug. 1639. It is believed that Joseph Loomis
was in the company with him. In that case it is likely he arrived in Windsor,
Conn. in the summer or autumn of 1639. His house was near the mouth of the
Farmington River on "The Island." That area was called "the
Island" because when raining, the Connecticut River overflowed, causing it
to temporarily become an island.
Joseph
and Mary Loomis had 8 ch., all born in England, and came to America with them.
Their five sons were freeman--believed to mean those who enjoy political
liberty (7 Oct 1669).

He was the first lieut. in the 16th Regiment Continental, and fell in the
battle of Williamsburg, Canada. The following letter was written to his family
prior to the battle:
Sacketts Harbor, NY
2 Oct 1813
Dear Parents:
I have only time to inform you that we are about embarking
for Canada. Our army from Fort George is on the way up the lake to join us.
They have abandoned Fort George, after destroying it, and the town of Newarki.
I am happy to inform you that I am promoted from a 3rd to a 2nd Lt., from last
May, and by vacancies happening above me I am now a 1s't Lt. and have commnad
of a company of 60 men. The conflict will be a bloody one, and if I survive it,
will write particulars (I hope from Montreal); if not, remember me as I
deserve. I hope to sustain the honor of our family and name. I am in high
spirits and sure of conquering. My love to all our family and friends.
In haste I remain your obedient
Edward Olmsted. Lt. 16th U.S. Infantry.

Capt. Gidion Olmsted marched with the East Hartford Company
for the relief of Boston, April 1775. Six other Olmsteds also went with the
company. He afterwards commanded the privateers Raven and Sea Flower, the sloop
Hawk, of 12 guns and 60 men, and the brig Gen. Green, of 16 guns and 100 men.
In 1778 he was captain of a French privateer and was captured by the English
sloop Ostrich and taken to Jamaica. Here, with three compatriots, he was put
upon the sloop Active, Capt. Underwood, bound for New York, with stores for the
British Army. On arriving at New York the prisoners were to be sent to the
infamous prison ships at that port. The crew consisted of the captain, mate, and
two sailors. There were three male passengers and a negro servant on board. On
Sunday night, Sept. 12 about 12 o'clock, Olmsted and two of his friends were on
deck, an old sailor being at the wheel. The watch being called, the other
prisoner and the sailor came on deck. Capt. Underwood and the mate were about
to follow when Olmsted and Clark (the prisoner) drew up the ladder and told
them they would kill them if they came on deck. They the coiled a cable around
the companion way, Olmsted being wounded by a pistol ball from below while
doing so. The course of the vessel was changed toward Egg Harbor, NJ. Towards
daylight those below began to fire their pistols through the chinks of the
cabin. Capt. Olmsted ordered them to desist or he would fire a four pounder
into the cabin. Capt. Underwood retorted, "Fire and be dammed". And
they did, damaging, however, only a puncheon of rum, and a barrel of coffee.
Underwood, in a rage, cried out that he would blow up the vessel. Olmsted told
him he might do it and be dammed; he was no more afraid of going to the bottom
than they. Underwood was about to fire his pistol into the powder barrel, when
the mate stopped him, and one of the passengers offered to pay all their losses
if they would cease firing their pistols. But they would not, and another four
pounder was sent through the bulkhead. The foresail was then unbent and lashed
around the companion to screen those on deck; but, finding that the rudder had
been wedged, they cut a hole in it and fired a swivel, loaded with thirty
musket balls into the cabin. This was the last shot fired. Capt. Olmsted and
his comrades now began to tear up the deck to get at the rudder, when those
below gave up the contest, hoping the Yankees would take a boat and leave when
near the shore, or that an English cruiser might relieve them. They unwedged
the rudder in this hope and things became more "friendly", and a
quarter of mutton was passed into the cabin. Early Tuesday morning the captors
made Cape May and hauled down their sails to avoid discovery by any chance
cruiser. They were discovered however, by the American brig Convention, which
showed British colors, and fired upon them. The sloop was taken Charge by the Convention and her
consort, the Girard, and taken to Philadelphia. The cargo was sold for $98.80.
The U.S. Commissioners of Appeals awarded the entire amount to Olmsted and his
associates. The following advertisement appeared in the Conn. Courant:
"The privateer Raven, Gideon Olmsted, commander, now lying at Rocky Hill
in Wethersfield, CT, will sail for a six weeks' cruise within five days. A few
gentlemen seamen are wanted, if they apply to the Commander on board, within
the above time. Sept. 11, 1780."

Charles removed with his parents to So. Bristol, NY, where the family lived for
four years, then removing to West Bloomfield, NY was then considered "out
West," and so called in New England. While living here Mr. Olmstead cast
his first presidential vote, in 1844, for Henry Clay. In 1847 he bought land in
East Bloomfield, where he settled, and five years later married, nine of his
children being born there. In 1902 the aged couple went to live with their two
unmarried sons, Frank and John, and here in this home they passed the
fifty-seventh anniversary of their marriage. By these records it will be seen
these children were slow to wander from their early home, the dearest place on
earth to them. THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, 1915, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page

Notes:
NELSON HOLLISTER, who died on March 2, 1897,
was for a long period one of Hartford's prominent business men and substantial
citizens. He was a picturesque figure on the streets where his flowing pure
white hair and beard, clear complexion, and kindly smile attracted general
attention.
Born Feb. 12, 1810, in Andover,
Conn., son of Gideon and Mary (Olmstead) Hollister, our subject was a
descendant of one of the historic families of the Colonial period of New
England and Connecticut, and a family of prominence, too, in the history of the
State.
(I) John Hollister, the ancestor of
the American Hollisters, is believed to have been born in England in 1612, and
to have emigrated to America about 1642, sailing from Bristol, England. His
name is of record in Wethersfield, Conn., as early as 1642. He became one of
the most prominent men of that town and the Connecticut Colony, and represented
the town many times in the Legislature. He married Joanna, daughter of Hon.
William Treat, Sr. John Hollister died in 1665.
From this emigrant ancestor the
late Nelson Hollister was a descendant in the seventh generation, his line
being through John (2), Thomas, Gideon, Nathaniel and Gideon (2).
(II) John Hollister (2), son of
John the emigrant, born about 1644 in Wethersfield, married in 1667 Sarah,
daughter of William Goodrich. Mr. Hollister was one of the leading men of
Glastonbury, where he died in 1711.
(III) Thomas Hollister, son of John
(2), born in 1672 in Wethersfield, married Dorothy, daughter of Joseph Hills,
of Glastonbury, and lived and died in that town, passing away in 1741.
(IV) Gideon Hollister, son of
Thomas, born in 1699 in Glastonbury, married in 1723 Rachel, daughter of Sergt.
Nathaniel Talcott, and settled in the East Parish of Glastonbury. Mr. Hollister
was a lieutenant in the militia, and a deacon in the church in Glastonbury. He
died in 1785.
(V) Nathaniel Hollister, son of
Gideon, born in 1731 in Glastonbury, married in 1754 Mehitabel
"Mabel" Matson. He died
in 1810; Father: Thomas Matson -
Mother: Rachel Fox.
(VI) Gideon
Hollister (2), son of Nathaniel, and the father of Nelson
Hollister, born 20 JAN 1776 in Eastbury, Connecticut, in Glastonbury, married
15 Nov. 1798, Mary Olmstead, of East Hartford, and settled in Andover, Conn.,
where he was a manufacturer of paper, and a valued and respected member of
society. He died in 1864.
Mary (Olmstead) Hollister d. 17 September 1827 - she was the
daughter of, Samuel Olmstead and
Jerusha Pitkin
Nelson Hollister, the subject
proper of this sketch, in youth became engaged, with his father and brothers,
in the manufacture of paper. Subsequently he removed to Hartford, and in about
1840 engaged in business on Front street, as a dealer in paper stock and rags,
where he laid the foundation of a large fortune. Late in the sixties he
disposed of his business and retired. Mr. Hollister was identified with a
number of banks and corporations, among them the old Charter Oak Life Insurance
Co., the Etna Fire Insurance Co., the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and
Insurance Co., and the State Bank, in all of which he was a director. He
superintended the erection of the large granite building on the corner of Main
and Atheneum streets, now the property of the Etna Life Insurance Co. He was
the first treasurer of the Hartford & Connecticut Valley Railroad Co. He
was president of the Cedar Hill Cemetery Association, and took an active
interest in the cemetery's development. He was an original member and a deacon
of the Pearl Street Congregational Church, organized in 1852. Mr. Hollister was
also a member of the Veteran Corps of the Governor's Foot Guard, in which he
ever took an active interest. In 1894 he was admitted as a member of the
Connecticut Historical Society. Up to two years before his death, in spite of
his years, Mr. Hollister was one of the most active men of Hartford. He was
possessed of a vigorous constitution and good health, was a great lover of
outdoor life and sports, and enjoyed seeing played the National game of
baseball.
On May 12, 1834, Mr. Hollister was
married to Edith Sawyer, born Nov. 21, 1815, daughter of Elijah R. and Fanny
(Spencer) Sawyer, of Windham, Conn. They had four children, as follows: (1)
Arthur N. Hollister, born Dec. 28, 1835, died Jan. 18, 1897. (2) Erskin B.
Hollister, born May 4, 1842, died Nov. 21. 1859. (3) Edith Sawyer Hollister,
born May 15, 1845, was married May 13, 1867, to Charles Augustus Robinson. (4) Lucy
Sawyer Hollister, born Aug. 3, 1848, married June 14. 1870, Albert H. Olmsted.
(Albert was a half brother to Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr.)

Three brothers who were in Genesee Co, NY; perhaps
Livingston Co, NY before that and eventually will lead back to Vermont,
specifically the family of Ethan Allen.
Comfort and his brothers lived in Genesse Co, NY and
brother, Ira began the interest in hot-air ballooning from his experiences in
the Civil War. The brothers went on from hot-air ballooning as a living,
performing nationwide as the "Flying Allens", I see that a Jonathan
Allen born in VT in 1750 moved to Madrid,NY in early 1800's with some of his
sons. His children are listed as Samuel, Truman, Henry, Abraham, Eliza, Elisha,
Ira, Charles, Jonathan, Rachel, John, and Lois. Some of them are listed in the
1810 Census for Madrid...Jonathan, Ira and Henry.
There are so many Ira's, many from the same family from
Vermont, that it gets rather confusing. If anyone has information to share I
would be greatful.
Ethan's brother Ira died in 1814, he had a son, Ira Hayden

The early life of John Charles Olmsted was filled with
extraordinary and traumatic events that were important in forming his shy
personality and his broad-ranging interests. He was born in Vandeuvre, near
Geneva, Switzerland, son of Dr. John Hull Olmsted and Mary Cleveland Perkins
Olmsted. By the time he was five, John Charles had traversed the Atlantic
twice, lost his father to tuberculosis, gained a stepfather in 1859 (his uncle,
Frederick Law Olmsted), and settled down to a more orderly life, in a house in
the middle of Central Park, then under construction. JC Olmsted was a "man of few words, fond of detail,Š
